Is a 20 Litre per Day AWG the Right Size? A20 Compared
Short answer: twenty litres a day is the sweet spot for a couple to a family of three in a humid or mixed climate — and coincidentally the cheapest running point in the Zenius household range at $0.03–0.06 per litre. In an arid room it becomes a two-adult machine, so size up to 40 L/day if your interior runs dry.
The same machines are sold and searched for under several labels — air water generator, air-to-water machine, water-from-air machine and atmospheric water maker all describe this equipment. Whichever term brought you here, everything below applies identically.
The 20 L/day class in Zenius terms
| Model | Rated output | Best for | Standout |
|---|---|---|---|
| A20 | 20 L/day | Apartments, 1–4 people | The long-running Zenius best-seller |
| A20 Home | 20 L/day | Residential kitchens | Home finish and dispensing |
| A20S | 20 L/day | Rentals and small offices | 4-in-1: water plus air-treatment functions |
| A40 | 40 L/day | Households of 4–6 | Buffer for drinking plus cooking |
Choosing between them is rarely about litres — it is about finish, footprint and whether you want the combined air-treatment functions of the A20S.
Who actually fits inside twenty litres
- Couple, no children — comfortable, with reserve for guests.
- Family of three in a humid city — comfortable; 2–3 L drinking plus 1–2 L cooking per person fits easily.
- Family of four — marginal. Zenius sizing puts 3–5 people at 15–40 L/day, which is why four-person households are usually pointed at the A40 rather than the A20.
- Family of four in an arid climate — no. Budget 25–35 L/day and let the A70 carry the buffer.
- Small office of ten or fewer — yes, at 1–2 L per head per day.
What it costs to run, and where
| Line item | A20 |
|---|---|
| Rated output | 20 L/day |
| Rated power | 0.97 kW |
| Energy per litre (humid) | 0.50 kWh/L |
| Electricity per year at $0.15/kWh | $280–390 |
| Filters per year | $100 |
| Total operating cost per litre | $0.03–0.06 |
| Hardware reference (FOB China) | $900–1,500 |
| Five-year cost of ownership | About $2,925 |
| Payback against bottled water at $0.30/L | About 16 months |
Electricity tariff moves the answer more than any other single input. The identical A20 works out at roughly $0.024 per litre in Saudi Arabia, $0.041 in the UAE, $0.085 at the US average and around $0.20 in Germany — which stretches payback from under six months to 18–24 months.
Solar and battery pairing
A 1.5–2 kW solar array covers the full annual electricity load of an A20, dropping running cost to filters and servicing only — roughly $0.02–0.04 per litre. Any standard AC inverter works, because nothing about these units is grid-specific beyond supply voltage. In sun-rich markets that combination is usually what makes the payback arithmetic work.
Before you sign off on twenty litres
- Measure your actual humidity at the installation spot, not the city average.
- Count heads and multiply: 2–3 L drinking plus 1–2 L cooking per person per day.
- Decide whether guests or a hot week should be covered by buffer, not by running the compressor flat out.
- Ask for the derated output curve and the filter schedule in writing.
- Confirm warranty terms — Zenius gives two years parts and labour with extension at 6% or 12% of unit price.
