Portable Atmospheric Water Generators: Camping, RV, Boats and Off-Grid Use
Quick Answer: A portable atmospheric water generator makes 12 to 70 litres of drinking water a day from humidity, on 12 V/24 V DC or mains power. For a couple camping or a van, a 12 to 20 L/day unit such as the Aquaura A12 covers drinking and cooking; a family base camp needs 40 to 70 L/day. Budget 0.3 to 0.5 kWh per litre, roughly 400 W of solar per 30 litres of daily output, and expect 30 to 60 percent of rated capacity below 30 percent humidity.
Portability changes the engineering problem. A stationary atmospheric water generator (AWG) is sized for a building with stable power, stable temperature and a service contract. A portable one is sized for a battery bank, a bumpy track, a salty marine atmosphere and an owner who cannot wait a week for a technician. This guide covers the portable and off-grid class: what size you actually need, how much solar and battery it takes, what humidity does to the numbers, how to mount it in a moving vehicle or boat, and what to maintain on the road.
If you are new to the technology, start with how an atmospheric water generator works. If you have already decided on a machine and want to sanity-check the size, use our five-step sizing framework.
1. What “Portable” Actually Means in This Category
Marketing uses the word loosely, so it is worth separating three genuinely different machines. Buying the wrong class is the most common and most expensive portable-AWG mistake.
- Portable countertop and under-counter units (12–20 L/day). The size of a large coffee machine or a small bar fridge. This is the van, camper, boat cabin and small-office class. The Aquaura A12 running on a 400 W roof array is the reference build here: it replaces jerry-can rotations for one or two people.
- Mobile floor-standing units (20–70 L/day). Wheeled or cabinet-mounted, mains or generator powered. This is the base-camp, field-clinic, film-crew and remote-workshop class. It is portable in the sense that two people and a van can move it, not in the sense that you carry it.
- Vehicle-mounted and containerised units (100 L/day and up). Bolted into a truck bed, trailer or 20 ft container. Genuinely mobile infrastructure for disaster response, construction camps and military use. See our containerised and modular systems guide for this tier.
Anything marketed as a handheld or backpack water-from-air device is a different product class with output measured in hundreds of millilitres per hour. It is a survival curiosity, not a drinking-water supply, and it is not what this page is about.
2. Sizing: Match the Machine to the Trip, Not to the Catalogue
Start from demand. The WHO treats 2 to 3 litres per person per day as the basic drinking-water minimum; add 1 to 2 litres for cooking, coffee and brushing teeth and you land at 3 to 5 litres per person per day. Add showering or laundry and the number stops being portable.
| Scenario | People | Daily demand | Recommended class | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend car camping, two people | 2 | 6–10 L | 12 L/day portable | Vehicle 12 V + small PV, or shore power |
| Full-time van life | 1–2 | 8–12 L | 12–20 L/day (A12, A20) | 400 W PV + 200 Ah LiFePO4 |
| Family RV, four people | 4 | 16–25 L | 20–40 L/day (A20, A40) | 600–800 W PV or generator hybrid |
| Small sailing or fishing boat | 2–4 | 10–20 L | 12–20 L/day, marine-mounted | 12/24 V DC bank + alternator or genset |
| Remote cabin or off-grid villa | 4–6 | 25–35 L | 40–70 L/day (A40, A70) | 1–1.5 kW PV array |
| Base camp, field clinic, work crew | 10–30 | 50–150 L | 70 L/day or vehicle-mounted 100–250 L | Genset or hybrid microgrid |
One rule decides almost every portable installation: size for the worst month, never the average. A machine that meets demand in August will not meet it in a dry, cool month, and on the road you cannot simply order more water.
3. Power: Solar and Battery Maths That Actually Holds
Cooling condensation costs energy. Expect 0.3 to 0.5 kWh per litre depending on ambient conditions, which means a 20 L/day household unit draws about 6 to 10 kWh a day — comparable to running a refrigerator. Our AWG electricity consumption guide breaks this down by model size.
- Solar rule of thumb: budget roughly 400 to 800 watts of PV per 30 litres of daily output, then size the battery for overnight and cloudy-day production rather than for a single day.
- Worked example: a 12–20 L/day unit needs around 6 kWh per day. In summer at roughly 40° latitude with five peak sun hours, a 400 W array produces about 2 kWh per day, so a 200 Ah LiFePO4 bank carries the remainder.
- DC matters: every inverter round-trip costs you energy. Where the installation is genuinely off-grid, ask for a DC-coupled or direct-DC configuration.
- Genset hybrid: for 40 L/day and above, a small inverter generator covering the compressor start surge is usually cheaper than doubling the battery bank.
4. The Honest Limit: Humidity and Temperature
Portable buyers are disproportionately hurt by humidity, because they travel to deserts, high altitudes and cold coastal mornings. A cooling-condensation AWG operates from about 30 percent relative humidity and 15 °C upward, and output falls progressively below that. Below roughly 20 percent RH it is not practical — a desiccant or metal-organic-framework system is the correct technology.
In the 20 to 40 percent RH band, expect roughly 20 to 40 percent of rated capacity. Below 30 percent RH and below 5 °C, a mobile installation typically delivers 30 to 60 percent of its rating. Low humidity does not damage the machine; it simply means fewer grams of water per cubic metre of air, so the compressor runs longer for the same litre. Our dry-climate performance page has the full curve.
5. Mounting in a Vehicle, Trailer or Boat
Motion, salt and dust are what kill portable machines, not the refrigeration cycle. Before you buy, confirm five things:
- Securement. Bolt the cabinet to structure, not to panelling. Compressor vibration plus corrugations loosens screws fast.
- Level. Condensate trays and drains are graded. A permanent list or rake causes pooling and overflow.
- Airflow clearance. The intake and condenser faces need free air on both sides. A machine shoved into a locker will produce a fraction of its rating and trip on high head pressure.
- Condensate and waste drain. Route to a trapped, secured line — never an open hose into a bilge or a footwell.
- Corrosion. Marine installs need stainless fixings and a sealed electrical bay; salt-laden intake air also shortens air-filter life.
6. Maintenance While You Are Moving
Filter intervals compress in the field. Air-side and sediment filters are replaced quarterly to semi-annually, the carbon block roughly every six months, and the RO membrane and UV-C lamp annually. In dusty or coastal conditions, treat the air-side filter as a quarterly item and carry a spare. Sanitise the storage tank at the start of each season and after any period of standing unused; a machine that sits warm and wet for a month grows biofilm regardless of how good the purification train is. 7. Buying Checklist for Portable and Off-Grid Units
- Ask for output at your worst-case RH and temperature, not the 30 °C / 80% catalogue rating.
- Ask for dB at one metre. Household units run roughly 35 to 55 dB; in a van or cabin at night this matters more than any other spec.
- Confirm the DC configuration and the compressor start surge, or your inverter will be undersized.
- Confirm spare-part logistics — a two-year parts-and-labour warranty is worthless if the part has to cross an ocean. See lifespan and warranty.
- Check the certification set you actually need for import and for your sector: ISO 9001:2015 manufacturing plus CE, RoHS, SASO and SFDA approvals are documented on our certifications page, alongside independent SGS water-test reports.
